Press-On Solid vs Pneumatic Forklift Tires: Which Should You Buy?
Share
If you’re trying to choose between press-on solid (cushion) tires and pneumatic tires, here's the most important thing to know:
Most forklifts are built to accept one tire type.
In other words, this isn't usually a preference decision. Its a fitment + safety decision.
The rule that prevents 90% of mistakes
A forklift designed for cushion (press-on) tires is meant to run cushion tires.
A forklift designed for pneumatic tires is meant to run pneumatic tires.
There are a few exceptions, but the overwhelming majority of units are designed around a specific tire type for a specific application.
Why this matters
Trying to swap tire types can create real issues:
- Clearance problems
- Incorrect handling and stability
- Safety information on the truck no longer matching the setup
If you're not sure what your truck is designed for, don't guess. Confirm it.
Pneumatic forklifts: solid pneumatic vs air-filled pneumatic
If your forklift requires pneumatic tires, the next decision is usually:
- Solid pneumatic (recommended most of the time)
- Air-filled pneumatic (recommended only in specific cases)
Why solid pneumatic is usually the better choice
For most pneumatic-tire forklifts, solid pneumatic is the way to go for:
- Longevity
- Safety
Air-filled pneumatics can deflate or pop under load, which can create an unsafe situation.
When air-filled pneumatic can make sense
We typically only recommend air-filled pneumatic in:
- Very sandy yard applications
- That also have bad weather
If you're in that situation, well confirm the application and recommend the right setup.
Cushion (press-on solid) forklifts: what to know
If your forklift is a cushion-tire unit, its meant to run cushion/press-on solid tires.
A cushion forklift generally does not have:
- The clearance for pneumatic tires
- The capability for pneumatic tires
- The correct safety information for pneumatic tires
Same goes the other direction: a pneumatic forklift is designed around pneumatic tires.
How to confirm what your forklift needs (fast)
To quote tires, we typically just need:
- A clear photo of your current tire sidewall (size is usually printed there)
To confirm your current tires are correct (recommended), send:
- A readable photo of the forklift data plate (make/model)
- The serial number (especially if you have more than one of the same model)
If the sidewall is too worn to read, we can still confirm using:
- A photo of the forklift
- A readable data plate photo
- Or your make/model/serial number (so we can find the year and the correct manual)
Quick decision guide
- If your truck is built for cushion tires buy cushion/press-on tires.
- If your truck is built for pneumatic tires buy pneumatic tires.
- If your truck needs pneumatic tires, choose solid pneumatic in most cases.
- Consider air-filled pneumatic only for very sandy yards with bad weather.
